ELI5: What is Radiation and what types do we have?

Imagine everything is made of tiny, tiny building blocks called atoms. Sometimes, these atoms are a little unstable and want to get rid of extra energy. They do this by shooting out tiny bits of energy or particles. This shooting-out stuff is called radiation.

Think of it like throwing a ball: the atom is throwing out the ball (radiation) to become more stable.

We have different kinds of "balls" (radiation), and some are stronger than others:

• Light: Yep, even the light from your lamp or the sun is radiation! We call it electromagnetic radiation. It's a safe kind, mostly. Too much sun can give you a sunburn, though!

• Radio waves: These are also electromagnetic radiation, but with less energy than light. Your radio, phone, and WiFi use them. They're generally harmless.

• Microwaves: Your microwave oven uses these to heat up your food. They're a type of electromagnetic radiation too. The oven is designed to keep the radiation inside.

• X-rays: Doctors use these to see your bones. They are a stronger type of radiation, so they use them carefully.

• Alpha, Beta, and Gamma: These are types of radiation that come from certain unstable atoms. They're often found in nature but can also be created. Gamma rays are the strongest and can be dangerous. They are not common in every day life but used in medicine for certain treatments.
