ELI5: What are X-Rays?
Imagine you have a super-powered flashlight, but instead of light, it shines something invisible that can go through things! That's kind of what X-rays are.
Think about when you break a toy inside its box. You can't see the break without opening the box, right? X-rays are like that invisible light that lets doctors see inside your body without having to cut you open!
Here's how it works:
- X-ray machine: This is like our super-powered flashlight. It makes these special X-ray beams.
- Going through you: The X-ray beams go through your skin, muscles, and bones.
- Some stop, some pass: Some things, like bones, are really good at stopping the X-rays. Other things, like your skin and muscles, let more X-rays pass through.
- Making a picture: The X-rays that do pass through hit a special detector, like a camera film. This detector then makes a picture.
- The picture: The parts of your body that stopped a lot of X-rays (like bones) look white on the picture. The parts that let more X-rays pass through (like your lungs) look darker.
X-rays are also used to look at your teeth at the dentist, find swallowed objects, and even check your luggage at the airport! They're a helpful tool to see things hidden from our normal eyes.
