ELI5: What is infrared radiation?

Imagine you're sitting near a campfire. You feel the warmth, right? That warmth is partly from infrared radiation!

Think of light as a rainbow of colors, from violet to red. But there's more light we can't see. Infrared radiation is like a color of light below red – we can't see it with our eyes, but we can feel it as heat.

Here's how it shows up in everyday life:

• Remote Controls: Your TV remote uses infrared radiation to talk to your TV. When you press a button, the remote sends out a special beam of infrared light with a secret message (code). The TV sees this light and knows what to do (like change the channel).

• Toasters: When you toast bread, the heating elements glow. A lot of that glow is infrared radiation. It's what cooks the bread!

• Heat Lamps: If you've ever seen a heat lamp keeping food warm at a restaurant, that's infrared radiation at work. It keeps the food warm without necessarily making it look bright.

• Night Vision: Some special glasses and cameras can "see" infrared radiation. This is useful at night because warm objects (like people and animals) give off infrared light, even in the dark.

• Your Body: Even you give off infrared radiation! That's why firefighters can sometimes use special cameras to find people in smoky buildings.
