ELI5: What would happen if the Moon disappeared?

Imagine the Moon vanished poof! overnight. What would happen in your everyday life?

First, nighttime would be much darker. The Moon's light helps us see a little bit at night. Without it, we'd need stronger flashlights!

Second, ocean tides would change a lot. The Moon pulls on the Earth, and that's why we have high and low tides. Without the Moon's pull, the tides would become much smaller, controlled only by the Sun. So, building sandcastles might be easier because the water wouldn't come up as high, but surfers would be very sad because there would be fewer big waves.

Third, days would get shorter. The Moon's gravity slows down the Earth's spin. Without it, the Earth would spin faster, making days only about 6-8 hours long! You'd have to go to school much earlier and go to bed much earlier! That's a big change!

Fourth, seasons could become less predictable. The Moon helps keep the Earth tilted at a steady angle. Without it, the tilt could wobble more, making summers hotter and winters colder sometimes, and other times the opposite!

Finally, animals that depend on the Moon would be confused. Some animals, like sea turtles and some birds, use the Moon to navigate or know when to breed. Without the Moon, they might get lost or have trouble finding mates.

In short, no Moon means darker nights, smaller tides, shorter days, wacky weather, and confused animals. It would change lots of things we take for granted!
