ELI5: what is Web3
Web3 is like a new internet where you own what you create and use, instead of big companies.
Imagine the internet today as a big playground. Web2, the playground we currently use, has lots of fun slides and swings (like Facebook, YouTube, and Instagram). These slides and swings are owned by big companies, and they decide who gets to play and what the rules are. They also keep all the tickets you earn while playing (your data and content).
Web3 is like a new playground where you own your own toys and the land you play on. Think of it this way:
- You own your stuff: If you build a cool sandcastle (create content), you own it, not the playground owner. You can take it to another playground (another platform) if you want.
- No one can kick you out unfairly: Because it's based on a system called blockchain, it's like a shared record book that everyone can see. It's very hard for someone to erase your sandcastle or ban you from the playground without everyone noticing.
- You can earn real money: Instead of just earning playground tickets, you can earn special tokens (like cryptocurrency) for playing and creating. These tokens can be exchanged for real money.
- It's more private: You don't have to give your real name and address to play. You can use a special code, like a superhero name, to keep your identity secret.
