ELI5: What is concrete and why do we use it for building houses?

Imagine you're making a big sandcastle. What happens when the tide comes in? It washes away!

Concrete is like super-strong, waterproof sandcastle material. It's made from:

• Gravel and Sand: These are like the main parts of your sandcastle. They give concrete its bulk.
• Cement: This is the magic glue! It's a special powder that, when mixed with water, gets hard and sticky. Think of it like the superglue that holds your sand together.
• Water: This activates the cement and helps it stick everything together.

Why do we use concrete for building houses?

• It's Super Strong: It can hold up a lot of weight, like the roof of your house and all your furniture.
• It Lasts a Long Time: Houses need to last for many years, and concrete is very durable. It doesn't rot like wood.
• It Doesn't Burn Easily: This is very important for safety! If there's a fire, concrete walls will help protect you.
• It's Easy to Shape: When it's wet, you can pour it into any shape you want, so you can make walls, floors, and even fancy decorations.
• It's Everywhere: It's used for roads, bridges, sidewalks, and lots of other things around us.
