ELI5: What is an SM-3 missile?

An SM-3 missile is like a super-fast, super-accurate baseball bat that knocks enemy missiles out of the sky before they can hurt anyone.

Imagine bad guys are throwing baseballs (those are the enemy missiles) at your town. You don't want those baseballs to hit anything! The SM-3 is your special "bat" that is launched up into space to smash those baseballs before they come close.

Here's how it works:

• Detecting the threat: First, radars, which are like super-powered eyes, spot the enemy baseball (missile) flying towards you. They figure out where it's going.
• Launching the SM-3: Next, you launch your SM-3 "bat" from a ship or a land base.
• Flying into Space: The SM-3 zooms way up into space, outside of the Earth's atmosphere. It's like sending your special bat really high so it can get a good swing.
• Finding the Baseball: The SM-3 has its own little "eye" that helps it find the enemy baseball (missile) in space.
• Smashing the Baseball: Instead of exploding, the SM-3 crashes directly into the enemy missile. This is called "hit-to-kill." It's like your baseball bat perfectly hitting the enemy baseball and shattering it into tiny pieces.
• Protecting Everyone: Because the enemy baseball is destroyed in space, it can't hurt anyone on the ground.
