ELI5: What is Radar and How it work?
Imagine you're playing hide-and-seek in a big, dark room. You can't see anyone! Radar is like a special way to "see" things, even when it's dark or foggy, using sound!
Instead of using sound like echolocation (like bats), radar uses radio waves, which are like invisible light.
Here's how it works:
- Radar sends out a 'shout': A
radarmachine sends out a burst of radio waves, just like you yelling "Marco!" in hide-and-seek.
- The 'shout' bounces back: If the radio waves hit something, like an airplane or a car, they bounce back, just like your friend yelling "Polo!"
- Radar listens for the echo: The
radarmachine has a special antenna that listens for the returning radio waves.
- Radar figures out where the thing is: Based on how long it takes for the radio waves to bounce back, the
radarcan figure out how far away the object is. The strength of the returning signal also tells the radar how big the object is.
Here are some other examples:
- Air traffic controllers use radar to track airplanes in the sky.
- Weather forecasters use radar to see where rain or snow is falling.
- The police use radar to check if you are speeding.
