ELI5: What is a black hole?
Imagine you have a toy bin. You can put toys in, and you can take them out.
A black hole is like a super-duper toy bin, but instead of toys, it's for everything – light, stars, planets, even you!
Here's why it's special:
- Super Strong Gravity: Imagine your friend is really good at grabbing toys. A black hole is like the best toy-grabber ever because it has tons of stuff squeezed into a tiny space. This makes its gravity incredibly strong.
- Nothing Escapes: If a toy gets too close to your super-grabby friend, it's gone forever! Similarly, if anything gets too close to a black hole, it's pulled in and cannot escape, not even light. That's why it's "black" – because no light comes out.
- The Edge (Event Horizon): Imagine a line around your super-grabby friend. If a toy crosses that line, poof, it's gone! This line around a black hole is called the
event horizon. Cross it, and there's no turning back.
