ELI5: What if Earth stopped spinning?
Imagine Earth is like a spinning merry-go-round. We're all holding on, and that spin keeps us nicely balanced. Now, what if it suddenly stopped?
- Everything flies Eastward: Remember when the merry-go-round stops suddenly? Everyone stumbles in the direction they were going. That's what would happen. Because the Earth was spinning super fast (around 1,000 mph at the equator!), everything not bolted down would keep moving eastward. Cars, houses, even you! It would be like a giant, sudden gust of wind, but everywhere.
- Super-Crazy Weather: Our weather is largely driven by the Earth's spin. It creates the
Coriolis effect, which shapes wind patterns and ocean currents. Without this, our weather would be completely unpredictable and extreme. We're talking about massive, constant storms and crazy temperature swings.
- One Long Day, One Long Night: Right now, we have day and night because the Earth spins, exposing different parts to the sun. If it stopped, one side of the Earth would be in constant sunlight, baking hot. The other side would be in permanent darkness, freezing cold. Think about never seeing the sun, or never seeing the stars!
- No More Satellites! Many of our satellites rely on Earth's rotation to stay in orbit. Without the spin, they'd fall out of the sky! No more GPS, no more satellite TV, no more weather forecasts from space.
- We'd Be Very Different: Over a very, very long time, the shape of the Earth would change. The spin makes the Earth bulge a bit at the equator. Without it, the Earth would become more like a perfect sphere.
