ELI5: How does AI spot sickness?

AI spots sickness by learning patterns from lots of healthy and sick people's information, then recognizing those patterns in new people.

Imagine you have a giant sticker book filled with pictures of healthy and sick kids. The AI is like a super-smart kid who looks at all the stickers, learns what healthy kids usually look like (bright eyes, rosy cheeks), and what sick kids look like (pale face, runny nose).

• First, people give the AI lots of information, like doctors' notes, X-rays, and even sounds of coughs. This is like showing the AI all the pages in the sticker book.
• The AI looks for patterns. For example, it might learn that kids with a fever often have a certain type of cough. It's like the AI noticing that the sick kids in the sticker book often have a certain color of sticker next to them.
• When someone new comes along, the AI looks at their information and compares it to what it learned. It's like the AI looking at a new sticker and saying, "Hmm, this kid has a pale face and a cough that sounds like the cough from the sick kids in my sticker book. They might be sick!"

• If you always get a tummy ache after eating ice cream, you learn that ice cream might make you sick.
• The AI does the same thing, but with way more information and much faster!
