ELI5: How does a toilet work?
A toilet works by using gravity and a clever trap to quickly flush away waste with water.
Think of your toilet like a little boat race for poop and pee! When you flush, you're opening a gate that starts the race. Here's how it all happens:
- The Tank Fills: The tank behind the toilet holds clean water, like a swimming pool waiting to be used. A floaty thing inside (called the float) tells the water to stop filling when it's full, just like a lifeguard saying "That's enough!"
- You Push the Handle: When you push the handle, it's like pulling a lever to open the gate. This lifts a flapper (a rubber stopper) at the bottom of the tank.
- Water Rushes Down: All that water in the tank rushes down into the bowl, like a big wave.
- The Siphon Starts: This is the coolest part! The rush of water fills up a curved pipe at the bottom of the bowl called the siphon. The siphon is shaped like an upside-down "U". As water fills the siphon, it creates suction, like when you use a straw to drink your juice.
- Everything Gets Sucked Away: The suction from the siphon pulls everything in the bowl – the water, the waste – down the drain and into the sewer pipes. It's like a giant vacuum cleaner for your toilet!
- The Tank Refills: As the bowl empties, the flapper falls back down, closing the gate. The tank starts refilling with fresh water, and the float rises again. Once the tank is full, the toilet is ready for its next race!
