ELI5: Are plants alive?

Imagine you have a puppy. It eats, drinks, sleeps, and plays. We know it's alive!

Plants are alive too, but they do things a little differently. Think of it like this:

  • Eating: Instead of eating kibble, plants make their own food using sunlight, air, and water in a process called photosynthesis. It's like a plant chef!
  • Drinking: Plants drink water through their roots, just like you drink water from a glass.
  • Sleeping: Plants don't close their eyes like we do, but they do have a resting period, often at night. They slow down their metabolism (how they use energy).
  • Growing: Puppies get bigger, and so do plants! They grow taller, sprout new leaves, and even make flowers and fruits.
  • Breathing: We breathe in air and breathe out carbon dioxide. Plants do almost the opposite! They take in carbon dioxide from the air and release oxygen, which is the air we need to breathe. This happens during photosynthesis.
  • Reproducing: Puppies can have puppies. Plants can make seeds that grow into new plants.
So, even though plants don't run around and bark, they're doing lots of things that show they're alive. They grow, eat (make their own food!), drink, breathe, rest, and reproduce. They're quiet roommates on our planet!
