ELI5: Why is renewable energy important

Renewable energy is important because it helps us keep our planet healthy and gives us power without running out of fuel.

Imagine our planet is like a big toy box filled with energy sources. Some of these sources, like coal and oil, are like batteries that run out eventually. We use them to power our homes, cars, and everything else that needs electricity. But once those batteries are empty, they're gone forever! Using them also makes the toy box dirty with pollution, like when you spill juice all over your toys. This pollution makes the air we breathe yucky and can make us sick.

Renewable energy is like having toys that recharge themselves! These include things like:

• Solar energy: Like a toy that gets charged by the sun. Solar panels on roofs collect sunlight and turn it into electricity for our homes.
• Wind energy: Like a toy powered by blowing on it. Wind turbines are big windmills that spin in the wind and make electricity.
• Hydro energy: Like a toy that uses water to work. Dams use the power of flowing water to generate electricity.

• We can keep using electricity for a long, long time.
• The air we breathe will be cleaner and healthier.
• We help protect the planet for ourselves and for our friends.
