ELI5: Why is quantum computing so hard to build
Quantum computing is hard because quantum bits (qubits) are like super delicate spinning tops that easily fall over if you even look at them wrong.
Imagine you have a regular light switch; it can be either on (1) or off (0). That’s like a regular computer bit. Now, imagine that spinning top. It's not just standing up or lying down; it can be spinning tilted at all sorts of angles at the SAME TIME. These angles represent a qubit being both 0 and 1 at the same time, which is what makes quantum computers powerful.
But here's the problem:
- Sensitivity: Even a tiny vibration, a change in temperature, or a stray electrical field can make the spinning top wobble and fall over. When the top falls, the qubit loses its special “both 0 and 1” state, and you lose the information. This is called decoherence.
- Isolation: To keep the top spinning perfectly, you need to isolate it from everything! This means incredibly cold temperatures (colder than outer space!) and shielding from any interference. Think of trying to balance a feather on your nose while someone is blowing a fan at you – nearly impossible!
- Control: You don't just want the top to spin, you want to control how it spins so you can do calculations. Think about trying to gently nudge that spinning top to change its angle without making it fall. It requires very precise tools and techniques.
- Scaling: Building one spinning top that works is hard. Building thousands, all working together perfectly, is even harder! Each top needs to be perfect, and they need to interact with each other without causing them all to fall over.
