ELI5: Why Is Jesus Often Painted with a Halo?

18 views Oct 13, 2026 2 min read

Artists paint a halo around Jesus to show everyone that he is holy, special, and full of goodness, just like a glowing sticker that says "this person is important."

In everyday life, we use visual symbols all the time to quickly understand what is happening around us.

  • Think about a birthday party: the kid wearing the paper crown is the birthday boy or girl, so you immediately know who to celebrate.

  • Think about comic books: when a superhero powers up, the artist draws bright sparks or a yellow glow around them so you can see their special energy.

  • Think about emojis: when you text a smiley face with a ring of light over its head, your friends know it means someone is acting completely innocent or sweet.

A halo works the exact same way. Long ago, most people could not read books, so they learned stories by looking at pictures on church walls. If an artist painted a busy crowd of people, it was hard to tell who was who. To fix this, painters drew a bright circle of light, like a mini sun, behind Jesus's head.

This glowing circle represents divine light and purity. It acted as an instant signpost saying, "Look here! This is the most important and loving person in the picture."

Even today, just like a gold medal shows who won the race, the halo simply tells us that Jesus is pure, holy, and shining with love.
