ELI5: Why is data privacy important
Data privacy is important because it helps keep your personal information safe from being used in ways you don't want.
Imagine your personal information is like your favorite toy. You might share it with your best friend, but you wouldn't want a stranger to take it without asking, right? Data privacy is like having rules that say who can see and use your "toy" (your information) and what they can do with it.
Think about these things:
- Your name and address: If everyone knew where you lived, anyone could come to your house!
- Your birthday: People could pretend to be you or trick you.
- Pictures of you: Someone could use them to make you look silly or even pretend to be you online.
- Send you lots of junk mail or annoying phone calls.
- Sell your information to other companies without you knowing.
- Pretend to be you to steal money or get things in your name – this is called identity theft!
