ELI5: Why does Singapore have mandatory military service?

Singapore has mandatory military service because it's a small country that needs to protect itself.

Imagine your family lives in a small house, and there are bigger families around. To make sure no one bullies you or takes your toys, everyone in your family needs to learn how to be strong and defend your home. That's like Singapore! It's a tiny island surrounded by bigger countries.

Think of it like this:

• Tiny Size: Singapore is like a small playground.
• Bigger Neighbors: Other countries are like bigger kids who might try to take over the playground.
• Military Service (NS): National Service is like everyone in your family learning karate. It teaches them how to protect themselves and the house.

Why is this important?

• Protecting the Playground: NS helps Singapore keep its independence and stay safe.
• Deterrent: If someone knows you can defend yourself, they are less likely to try and bother you.
• Peace of Mind: It gives Singaporeans peace of mind knowing that their country is well-defended.
