Modern art looks simple because artists stopped trying to copy what the world looks like and started focusing on sharing big feelings and ideas.

Think about how you use your smartphone. If you want to show someone an apple, you do not spend three hours drawing every single detail with colored pencils; you just snap a quick photograph. A long time ago, before cameras existed, a painter’s main job was to make pictures that looked exactly like real life. Once cameras were invented, artists were free to play around and ask: "What else can art do?"

Here is why that makes art look like something from everyday life:

• Texting with Emojis: When you send a red heart emoji to your mom, you are not drawing a real human heart with veins and muscles. You use a simple shape because the meaning of love is what matters. Modern art uses simple lines, shapes, and bright colors like visual emojis to show feelings like joy, anger, or peace.
• Playing with Recipes: Imagine a chef who takes away all the fancy sauces and just serves a plate with pure, sweet honey. They want you to taste the main ingredient by itself. Modern artists do this by painting a giant red square. They want you to experience pure color without being distracted by a picture of a house or a person.
• Everyday Objects as Ideas: Sometimes an artist puts a regular chair or a clean white canvas in a museum. It might look like something you have at home, but the art is not the object itself. The art is the question it makes you ask, like: "Why is this here?" or "What makes something special?"
