ELI5: Why do women have vaginal discharge?

Women have vaginal discharge because the body has a built-in, automatic cleaning system to keep itself healthy, clean, and protected.

Think of it like the way your mouth makes saliva or your eyes make tears. You do not have to wash the inside of your eyes with soap because your tears naturally blink away dirt and dust. In everyday life, discharge does the exact same job for a woman's body.

Here is how it works every day:

  • It takes out the trash: The body naturally sheds tiny, old skin cells and fluids. The discharge collects these old cells, carries them out of the body, and leaves them on the underwear.
  • It acts like a protective shield: Just like a garden needs good soil, the body has millions of friendly good bacteria. Discharge carries these helpers to fight off bad germs and stop itchy infections before they can even start.
  • It keeps things smooth: Just like lotion keeps your hands from getting dry and chapped, discharge keeps the delicate skin inside soft, moist, and comfortable during regular daily movements like walking, running, or riding a bike.
Throughout a normal month, this fluid changes its look and feel. Some days it might be thin and watery, and other days it might be thick and sticky like egg whites. This is completely normal and just means the body's internal clock, run by natural chemicals called hormones, is doing its regular job.

Finding a little bit of clear or whitish fluid in underwear is just a normal sign that the body is working properly and keeping itself clean, healthy, and safe every single day.
