ELI5: Why do we have wisdom teeth?
We have wisdom teeth because a long, long time ago, our ancestors had bigger jaws that needed extra teeth to chew tough food.
Imagine you're building with LEGOs. Your mouth is like a LEGO baseplate, and your teeth are the LEGO bricks.
- A long, long time ago: Our great-great-grandparents ate things like hard roots, uncooked meat, and tough plants. These foods needed lots of chewing.
- Bigger baseplate (jaw): Because they ate tough food, their "baseplate" (jaw) was bigger. They had more room for extra LEGO bricks (teeth).
- Extra LEGO bricks (teeth): These extra teeth, the wisdom teeth, helped them grind down the food. They were like extra helpers in the chewing process.
- Smaller baseplate (jaw): Because we eat softer food, our jaws didn't grow as big.
- Not enough room: The wisdom teeth are still trying to squeeze in, but there's not always enough room. Sometimes they get stuck (impacted) or push other teeth out of the way, like too many LEGO bricks trying to fit in a small space.
- That's why dentists often take them out, because they can cause problems if they don't fit properly. It's like removing a LEGO brick that's making the whole structure wobbly.
