ELI5: Why do we have time zones?

Imagine you have a friend who lives far, far away.

The sun shines on you, making it daytime. But because the Earth is round and spinning, the sun isn't shining on your friend at the same time! It might be nighttime for them.

If we didn't have time zones, everyone would use the same time.

  • When the sun is right above you (noon), you'd eat lunch.
  • But your friend, even if it's dark for them, would also have to eat lunch at "noon" your time! That would be weird. They'd be eating lunch in the middle of the night!
Time zones are like imaginary lines that divide the Earth. Each zone has its own time. This way, when the sun is highest in the sky for people in one zone, it's roughly noon for them.

Think of it as this:

  • The Earth is like a giant pizza.
  • We cut the pizza into slices – these are time zones.
  • Each slice gets its own "time".
So, when you wake up in the morning, the sun is shining on your slice. Meanwhile, your friend in a different slice might still be sleeping because the sun hasn't reached their slice yet!

Time zones help us keep track of the sun and make sure everyone's day matches what's happening outside. It makes it easier to plan calls, meetings, and even just know when to eat! Without them, it would be very confusing to live and work with people in different parts of the world.
