ELI5: Why do we get hungry?

Imagine your body is like a car. Cars need fuel to run, right? Our bodies need food for fuel!

When you haven't eaten for a while, your body starts running low on its main fuel, which is like gasoline for your car. We call this fuel glucose.

  • Low Glucose: When your glucose levels get low, your tummy starts rumbling.
  • Hormones Talking: Your body sends out special messengers called hormones. One of these messengers is called ghrelin. Ghrelin is like a little alarm clock that tells your brain, "Hey! We need food!"
  • Brain Signals: Your brain, especially a part called the hypothalamus, receives the ghrelin signal.
  • Feeling Hungry: Your brain then makes you feel hungry. This feeling is your body's way of reminding you to fill up the tank!
Eating food gives your body the glucose it needs to keep working properly, like playing, running, and even thinking! When you eat, glucose levels go up and another hormone called leptin tells your brain "Okay, we have enough fuel now!" and the hunger goes away.

So, we get hungry because our bodies need food for energy, and it uses special messengers (ghrelin) to tell our brains when it's time to eat! Eating healthy foods helps keep your body strong and gives you the energy you need to play and learn!
