ELI5: why do solar panels get dirty
Solar panels get dirty because stuff from the air lands on them, just like when your car gets dusty.
Imagine your solar panels are like a big, shiny window on your roof. When it rains, the window gets wet, and the water can wash away some of the dirt. But often, things stick to the window, making it less see-through.
Here's why your solar panels get dirty:
- Dust: Think of dust like the tiny particles you see floating in the air when the sun shines through a window. This dust settles on the panels.
- Pollen: During springtime, trees and flowers release pollen, a yellow powder. Some of this pollen lands on your solar panels.
- Bird Droppings: Birds sometimes fly overhead and leave messes behind. These droppings can block the sunlight from reaching the panels.
- Leaves and Twigs: During fall, leaves and small branches can fall from trees and land on your roof, including your solar panels.
- Air Pollution: Smog and other pollutants in the air, like from cars or factories, can also deposit a layer of grime.
