ELI5: Why do prices go up over time?
Imagine you have a favorite toy. Lots of other kids want it too!
- Demand: That means lots of kids want something.
- Supply: How many of the toy are actually available.
Now, think about this happening with everything we buy, like food, clothes, and even houses!
There are a few reasons why prices usually go up over time, which is called inflation:
- More Money: Imagine everyone suddenly has more money. They can buy more things! This increases demand for everything, and if the stores don't have more things to sell (same supply), they raise prices.
- Things Cost More to Make: The people who make the toys (or grow the food, or build the houses) need things like metal, wood, and workers. If those things cost more, they have to charge more for the toys, food, or houses they sell.
- Not Enough Stuff: Sometimes, there aren't enough things to go around. Maybe bad weather ruins the crops, or a factory can't make as many toys as before. This lowers supply, which also makes prices go up.
