ELI5: why do evs have range anxiety

EVs have range anxiety because people worry they won't be able to drive far enough before the car's battery runs out of power, leaving them stranded.

Imagine your electric car, or EV, is like a toy race car that needs batteries. You want to drive it from your house to Grandma's, which is a long way away.

  • With a regular car (a gas car), if you run low on fuel, you can easily find a gas station to fill up. There are gas stations everywhere! You're not worried about getting stuck.
  • But with your toy race car, you only have the battery it came with. You're worried that the battery will run out before you reach Grandma's. That worry is range anxiety.
Why are people more worried about EVs than gas cars?
  • Fewer Charging Stations: Finding a place to charge your EV (like plugging in your toy car) isn't as easy as finding a gas station. There are fewer charging stations, especially in some areas.
  • Charging Time: Filling up a gas car takes just a few minutes. Charging an EV can take much longer – maybe half an hour at a fast charger or many hours at home.
  • Guessing Game: The range (how far you can drive) shown on the EV's display isn't always accurate. It can change depending on how fast you drive, if you use the AC, or even the weather. It's like your toy car's battery lasting longer if you drive slowly versus zooming around.
  • The Unknown: People are used to driving gas cars and know where gas stations are. EVs are newer, so people aren’t as familiar with where to charge them and how long it takes. They fear the unknown, which adds to the anxiety.
So, range anxiety is just the worry that your EV won't have enough "battery juice" to get you where you need to go before you can recharge it.
