ELI5: Why do different people find different things funny?
Different people find different things funny because everyone has a unique brain shaped by their own experiences, memories, and personality.
Think of your sense of humor like your favorite flavor of ice cream. You might love chocolate chip because it reminds you of baking cookies with grandma, while your friend prefers sour lemon because they enjoy surprises. Laughter works the exact same way.
When you laugh, your brain is usually doing two things:
- Spotting a surprise: A joke sets up a pattern, and the punchline breaks that pattern in a silly way.
- Connecting the dots: Your brain quickly solves the puzzle of why the silly thing makes sense.
Because we all live different lives, we do not all connect the dots the same way:
- Different experiences: If you love playing soccer, a funny video of a dog stealing a soccer ball might make you giggle non-stop. But someone who has never seen a soccer game might not understand why it is so silly.
- Different ages: When you are very young, simple peek-a-boo or someone making a funny face is hilarious because the world is brand new. As you grow up, you learn more words and rules, so you start enjoying clever wordplay and tricky riddles.
- Different moods: If you are having a super fun day with your best friend, even a silly squeaky noise can make you burst out laughing. But if you are tired or grumpy, that same noise might just feel annoying.
