ELI5: Why do different countries have different languages?

Imagine our world is like a giant playground, and people are like kids playing different games.

A long, long time ago, everyone on the playground probably played the same game and spoke the same language – let's call it "Original Talk". But as the playground got bigger, some kids went off to play in different corners.

• Separation: These groups of kids didn't see each other as much. They started to develop their own versions of the games, and naturally, their "Original Talk" started to change too.

• New Rules, New Words: Maybe one group found a cool new stick and invented a new game with it. They would need new words to describe the stick and the new game! This is like inventing new vocabulary.

• Influence: Also, the kids might hear sounds from the animals around them or copy the way the wind blows through the trees. These sounds might get added to their "Talk". This is like environmental influence.

• Identity: Over time, these little changes added up. Each group's "Talk" became so different that they couldn't easily understand each other anymore. Their way of speaking became part of their identity – it showed which corner of the playground they belonged to.
