ELI5: Why do cats purr?

Imagine you're a tiny kitten. You're safe and warm with your mommy cat. You want her to know you're happy and feeling good. You make a special rumbling sound: purring!

Purring is like a tiny motor inside a cat's throat and chest. It's a low, vibrating sound.

Why do they do it? Well, nature has a few ideas:

• Happiness and Comfort: Just like when you smile, cats purr when they're feeling content. They might purr when you pet them, when they're snuggling, or when they're eating yummy food. It's their way of saying, "I'm happy!"

• Healing: Sometimes, cats purr even when they're hurt or scared. Scientists think purring might help them heal faster! The vibrations from purring might help strengthen their bones and muscles, like a tiny massage from the inside. Think of it as a natural medicine!

• Communication: Kittens purr to tell their mommy they're okay and need attention. Mommy cats also purr to comfort their babies. It's a way for them to talk to each other without making loud noises that might attract danger.

• Asking for Help: A cat might purr softly to get your attention when it's hungry or wants something. It's a gentle way of saying, "Excuse me, could you please help me?"
