ELI5: Why do books have genres?

Books have genres to help us quickly find the exact kind of story we want to read, just like labels help us find our favorite food at the grocery store.

Imagine walking into a giant supermarket where all the food is mixed together in one huge pile. You might find a carton of milk sitting next to a box of cereal, a bunch of bananas, and a bottle of shampoo. It would take you hours just to make breakfast! Because of this mess, stores put things into organized aisles:

  • The bakery aisle keeps all the bread and cookies together.
  • The produce section holds the apples and carrots.
  • The freezer section is where you go for ice cream.
A genre is just like one of those grocery store aisles, but for stories.

Every day, people have different moods. Sometimes you want to laugh, sometimes you want to solve a puzzle, and sometimes you want to be amazed by magic. Instead of opening every single book in the library to see what it is about, you just look at the genre:

  • Fantasy is the aisle for flying dragons, wizards, and magic spells.
  • Mystery is the aisle for detectives looking for clues to solve a secret.
  • Comedy is the aisle for silly jokes and stories that make you giggle.
  • Science Fiction is the aisle for space rockets, time machines, and robots.
Genres also help you try new things safely. If you love a story about a brave knight, you know you will probably like other books in the fantasy section.

Without genres, finding a good bedtime story would be like searching for a tiny lost toy in a messy bedroom. Genres keep the world of stories neat and tidy so you can grab the adventure you want and start reading right away.
