ELI5: Why Do Artists Paint Things That Don't Look Real?

Artists paint things that do not look real because they want to show how something feels, what it means, or share their imagination instead of just copying what their eyes see.

Think of a camera on a smartphone. If you want to remember exactly what your birthday cake looked like, you take a photo. The camera captures every single sprinkle and candle perfectly. But a photo cannot easily show how happy and excited you felt while blowing out those candles.

An artist might paint that same birthday party in a different way:

• Painting feelings: If they felt pure joy, they might paint the cake glowing like a giant, bright sun with wild swirls of yellow and pink all around the room.
• Using imagination: If a storybook artist wants to show a magical forest, they might paint blue grass, purple trees, and a floating river because it is fun to dream up worlds that do not exist.
• Focusing on ideas: An artist might paint a giant, heavy clock melting over a table to show the feeling of being bored and waiting for the school day to finally end.

Artists use abstract shapes, wild colors, and funny patterns the same way you use emojis in a text message. A yellow smiley face is not a real human face, but it instantly tells you that someone is happy. Artists paint things that look unusual to share a secret thought, a strong emotion, or a dream that a regular photograph just cannot capture.
