ELI5: Why Do Angels Have Wings in Art?

4 views Oct 13, 2026 2 min read

Artists gave angels wings to show that they are fast messengers from the sky who can travel between heaven and earth.

Long ago, when people wanted to show something special in a drawing, they had to use symbols that everyone understood from everyday life.

Think about how we use symbols today:

  • When you see a drawing of a person wearing a superhero cape, you instantly know they can fly, even if the picture is standing still.

  • When you see a picture of a delivery truck with a lightning bolt painted on the side, you know it brings packages very fast.

  • When people wear uniforms, like a firefighter's bright jacket, you know right away what important job they do.

Wings on angels work the exact same way. In daily life, the only things people saw moving through the sky were birds. Birds could zoom over tall mountains, avoid traffic, and fly right up into the clouds. Because people believed angels lived high up in heaven and had to deliver important messages down to people on Earth, artists borrowed bird wings to explain this job.

If an artist painted an angel looking just like a regular human standing in a crowd, nobody would know who the helper was. The wings acted like a special uniform. They showed that the angel was not a normal neighbor from down the street, but a super-fast visitor from above who was ready to zoom back into the sky at any second.
