ELI5: Why did World War 2 happen?
Imagine the world is a playground. After a big fight called World War 1, everyone was tired and wanted to be friends. But some kids, especially in Germany, were feeling sad and angry.
- They felt their toys (land and money) were taken away unfairly.
- They blamed others for their problems.
Other countries, like Britain and France, hoped Hitler would stop if they gave him a little bit of what he wanted (called appeasement). They hoped he'd be happy with just a small toy.
But Hitler wasn't happy. He wanted all the toys!
- He invaded other kids' playgrounds (countries).
- He made alliances with other bullies, like Italy and Japan.
Other countries joined in on both sides. Some were friends of Germany (the Axis powers), and others were against them (the Allied powers). The fight spread all over the world, becoming World War 2. It was a very long and sad time because everyone was fighting over who got what toys and who was in charge of the playground.
