ELI5: why did iraq war happen
The Iraq War happened because the United States and its allies believed Iraq, led by Saddam Hussein, had dangerous weapons and might help terrorists, so they decided to attack first.
In everyday life terms, it was a lot like thinking a neighbor might have a very dangerous firework or match and deciding to rush in before the fire starts.
- After the 9/11 attacks, U.S. leaders became much more worried about possible threats.
- They said Iraq had weapons of mass destruction and could use them or pass them to bad groups.
- They also wanted to remove Saddam Hussein from power.
- Later, after the invasion, those weapons were not found, which made the war very controversial.
- Imagine someone says, “I think there is a big danger in that house.”
- They do not wait to be 100% sure.
- They act fast because they fear something terrible might happen.
- But if the danger was not really there, people later ask, “Why did you do that?”
