ELI5: Why did gas prices go up because of the Iran War?
Gas prices went up because the Iran War made people worry about less oil being available.
Imagine you have a big box of cookies for your whole class.
- Usually, that box is always full, so everyone gets a cookie.
- But suddenly, someone says that the bakery where you get the cookies might be closed because of a problem (like the Iran War).
- Because the Iran War makes it hard to get oil out of the ground and ship it around, it's like the bakery closing.
- Oil is like cookie dough for making gas; without oil, there's less gas to go around.
- The price of each cookie (or gallon of gas) goes up!
- When there's plenty of oil (lots of cookies), gas is cheap.
- But when there's a chance we might run out of oil (the bakery might close), everyone wants to buy gas now, before itβs all gone. This extra demand pushes prices up higher.
