ELI5: Why can't we breathe in space?

Imagine you're trying to blow up a balloon. You need air inside to make it big and round, right? Our bodies need air too, specifically oxygen, to help us run, play, and even sleep!

Space is like a giant, empty room. It's mostly nothing! Here's why we can't breathe there:

  • No Air: The biggest problem is there's almost no air in space. Air is made of different things like oxygen, nitrogen, and other gases. Our lungs are designed to suck in air, grab the oxygen, and then get rid of the rest. But in space, there's hardly any air to suck in!
  • No Pressure: Think of air pushing on you from all sides. We call this air pressure. On Earth, this pressure is just right. But in space, there's almost no pressure at all. Imagine your body is like a balloon. Without air pressure pushing back, all the air inside you would try to escape, like the balloon deflating super fast. This is REALLY bad for your body!
  • Extreme Temperatures: Space is either super hot or super cold. Imagine being right next to a hot stove or stuck in a freezer. We need special suits to protect us from these extreme temperatures.
So, to breathe in space, we need to:
  • Bring our own air supply in a tank.
  • Wear a space suit that creates pressure around our bodies, like a balloon being protected.
  • The suit also protects us from the extreme temperatures of space.
Without these things, we can't get the oxygen we need, our bodies would try to explode from the lack of pressure, and we'd freeze or burn up. That's why astronauts wear big, puffy suits when they go to space!
