CRISPR can help plants by acting like tiny scissors that can precisely snip and change parts of a plant's instructions to make them better.
Imagine plants have instruction manuals, like a recipe book for how to grow tall, have yummy fruit, or fight off nasty bugs. These manuals are made of something called DNA. Now, sometimes there's a typo in the recipe, like saying "add too much salt" which makes the plant not grow well or get sick easily.
- CRISPR is like a super-accurate pair of scissors and a pen.
- It can find the exact typo (the bad part of the DNA).
- It cuts out the typo.
- Then, it can either let the plant's own repair system fix the hole (which sometimes makes the typo disappear!), or it can use the "pen" to write in the correct instruction (a better DNA sequence).
