ELI5: Why are eggs so expensive right now

Eggs are expensive right now because many chickens got sick with a bad flu.

Imagine you have a big playground with lots of kids playing. The kids are like chickens, and each kid makes a toy egg every day. These toy eggs are like the real eggs we eat. Usually, there are plenty of kids, so there are plenty of toy eggs for everyone to play with.

But now, a bad cough (like a flu) went around the playground. Lots of kids got sick and couldn't come to the playground. This means fewer kids are making toy eggs.

  • Fewer chickens (kids) = Fewer eggs (toy eggs).
Because there are fewer toy eggs, everyone wants them more! If you have only a few cookies to share with your friends, each cookie becomes much more valuable, right? It's the same with eggs. When there are fewer eggs, the price goes up.
  • More people wanting eggs + fewer eggs available = higher price.
Also, it costs more money for the farmers (playground teachers) to take care of the sick chickens. They need to buy medicine and make sure the healthy chickens don't get sick. This extra cost also makes the eggs more expensive.
  • Extra cost to take care of chickens = higher egg price.
Hopefully, the chickens (kids) will get better soon, and more eggs (toy eggs) will be available, so the price will go back down.
