ELI5: Why are citizens in the United States allowed to own guns?
Citizens in the United States are allowed to own guns because the country's most important rulebook, the Constitution, protects it as a fundamental right.
A very long time ago, when the United States was a brand new country, the leaders wrote a list of special promises called the Bill of Rights. One of these promises, called the Second Amendment, says that the government cannot stop everyday citizens from having weapons. Back then, people needed tools to protect their new communities, and they wanted to make sure they could always stand up for themselves.
In everyday life today, people in America own guns for a few common reasons:
- Safety and protection: Just like a family might put a strong lock on their front door or keep a fire extinguisher in the kitchen, some people keep a gun at home to protect their family from danger.
- Outdoor sports and hobbies: Many people use guns for fun and safe activities, like shooting at paper targets for practice, similar to playing a sport like archery or darts.
- Hunting: Some families go out into the woods to hunt animals like deer for food, which is a tradition passed down through generations.
