ELI5: What makes a soda fizzy?

Imagine you're blowing bubbles in a glass of water with a straw. The bubbles are air, right? Soda is kind of like that, but instead of air, it has a special gas called carbon dioxide (CO2).

Think of CO2 like tiny, excited kids at a playground (the soda bottle). They're bumping into each other and wanting to spread out. When the bottle is closed tight, there's lots of pressure squeezing all those excited kids (CO2) into the soda. That's why the soda is still and calm.

Now, when you open the bottle, whoosh! You hear that sound? That's the pressure escaping! It's like opening the gate to the playground. Suddenly, the excited kids (CO2) have more room to move around.

Because there's less pressure squeezing them, the CO2 kids want to become bubbles! They clump together and float to the top, making the fizz.

Here's how it works:

  • Step 1: CO2 gas is forced into the soda under high pressure during manufacturing.
  • Step 2: The pressure keeps the CO2 dissolved in the liquid.
  • Step 3: When you open the bottle, the pressure drops.
  • Step 4: The CO2 comes out of the liquid as bubbles.
  • Step 5: The bubbles tickle your nose and tongue, making it fizzy!
If you leave the soda open for too long, all the CO2 kids escape, and the soda goes flat because there's no more fizz!
