ELI5: What Is Value in Art?
In art, value simply means how light or how dark something looks.
Think of it like the lights in your bedroom:
- When you turn the big light all the way on, everything is bright and easy to see; that is a high value.
- When you turn the light completely off, the room turns black; that is a low value.
- When you leave just a soft nightlight on, you get gray shadows in the middle; that is a mid value.
In everyday life, value is what helps your eyes understand the real world. Imagine holding a bright yellow banana. If you look closely, the top side facing the kitchen ceiling looks light yellow because the light hits it directly. But the bottom side looks like dark, shadowy yellow because it is hiding from the light. Even though the whole fruit is yellow, the different amounts of light create different values.
Artists use these lights and darks like magic tricks on flat paper:
- Making things look 3D: If you draw a flat circle, it looks like a paper cutout. But if you color one side bright white, the middle gray, and the bottom dark black, that flat circle suddenly looks like a round, bouncy ball.
- Creating depth: Value shows us what is close and what is far away. In a park, the tree right in front of you looks dark, sharp, and clear. But the trees far away in the morning fog look pale, light, and fuzzy.
- Setting a mood: A picture made with lots of bright, light values feels sunny, happy, and energetic, just like a bright summer morning. A picture made with mostly dark values feels spooky, quiet, or mysterious, just like walking outside at midnight.
So, value is not about money; it is simply using lightness and darkness to turn flat lines into things that look real.
