ELI5: what is today

67 views Mar 12, 2026 2 min read

Today is the name we give to the current 24-hour period we are living through.

Imagine the week as a train. Each train car is a day: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Today is like the train car you are currently riding in. You're not in yesterday's car anymore, and you haven't reached tomorrow's car yet. You are right here, right now, in today's car.

  • Today is when you eat your breakfast, go to school or play, and see your family.
  • Today is when the sun rises and sets.
  • Today is a fresh start with new possibilities.
Think about it like this: you draw a picture today. You can't draw it yesterday because yesterday is gone. You can't draw it tomorrow because tomorrow hasn't arrived yet. You have to draw it today, in this very moment.

Today is different from yesterday and tomorrow because:

  • Yesterday is the past: things that already happened.
  • Tomorrow is the future: things that will happen.
  • Today is the present: what is happening right now.
So, when someone asks "What is today?", they want to know which day of the week it is – like is it Monday, Tuesday, or another day? They want to know what is happening right now in our 24-hour period.
