ELI5: What is the Port of Singapore and why is it so busy?

The Port of Singapore is like a super busy train station for ships, and it's busy because lots of goods from all over the world pass through it.

Imagine you want to buy a toy car made in China. That toy car doesn't magically appear in your local toy store. It needs to travel a long way! Most likely, it travels by ship. That's where the Port of Singapore comes in.

Think of Singapore as being in the perfect spot, like a train station right where many train lines meet.

• Many ships from different countries go near Singapore because it's along important sea routes, like highways on the ocean.
• These ships carry all sorts of things: toys, clothes, food, electronics - practically everything you buy!

• Ships stop there to drop off goods (like your toy car).
• Other ships pick up goods to take to different countries.
• Some ships even stop just to get more fuel or supplies.
