ELI5: What Is the Difference Between Tone and Value?

In everyday life, value is what something is worth or what is deeply important to you, while tone is the mood, attitude, or feeling behind the way something is expressed.

To understand this better, think of them in two simple ways:

1. Talking and Feelings (Words and Mood)

• Value is the actual meaning and importance of what you say. It is the truth or the big lesson, like saying "I love you" or "Please share your toys."


• Tone is the sound of your voice and the emotion behind it. If you say "Thank you" with a big smile, your tone is warm and happy. But if you roll your eyes and say "Thank you" with a grumpy voice, your tone is sarcastic and mean, even though the words are the same.

• Value is how much an object matters or how much it costs. A diamond ring has high financial value, but a homemade drawing from your best friend has high sentimental value because it is special to your heart.


• Tone is the visual style, shade, or "vibe" of that object. In colors, tone is how bright, soft, or dark a shade looks (like a calm pastel blue bedroom versus an energetic bright red one). In music, tone is the smooth or sharp sound a guitar makes.

• The value is the love, effort, and delicious ingredients you put into it—it is something truly special and good.


• The tone is the way you decorate the party room and sing the song—it sets a joyful, cheerful atmosphere.
