ELI5: What Is the Difference Between Shape and Form?

A shape is completely flat like a drawing on paper, while a form is solid and takes up real space so you can hold it in your hands.

Think of it like magic in everyday life:

• Shape is flat (Two-Dimensional): If you take a red crayon and draw a circle on a piece of paper, that is a shape. It only has height and width. If you look at it from the side, it disappears because it is totally flat. You cannot pick it up, look behind it, or fill it with water.
• Form is fat (Three-Dimensional): If you take some red playdough and roll it into a ball, that is a form. It has height, width, and depth. You can bounce it, hold it in your hands, and walk all the way around it.

• A square is a flat shape drawn in your coloring book, but a cube is a form, like a wooden building block or an ice cube.
• A triangle is a flat shape on a road sign, but a cone is a form, like a yummy ice cream cone or a party hat you can wear on your head.
• A rectangle is a flat shape painted on the wall, but a box is a form, like your cereal box that holds food inside.
