ELI5: What is the difference between OLED and MicroLED

12 views Mar 12, 2026 2 min read

OLED and MicroLED are different ways to make super bright and colorful pictures on your TVs and phones, but they use different tiny lights.

Imagine your TV screen is like a wall made of lots and lots of tiny light bulbs. OLED is like having each light bulb be able to turn itself on and off, and even change color all by itself. So when you want to see black, the light bulb just turns off completely, making a really dark black!

  • Each tiny OLED light makes its own light and color.
  • They can turn on and off super fast for bright colors and dark blacks.
  • Think of it as each pixel is a tiny, self-lighting candle.
MicroLED is like having even tinier, brighter light bulbs, but instead of making their own color, they shine through tiny filters to make red, green, or blue light. They are even brighter and can last longer than OLED.
  • MicroLEDs are super tiny and bright, like little spotlights.
  • They use filters to create different colors.
  • Think of it as each pixel is a tiny, super-bright flashlight shining through colored paper.
So, both OLED and MicroLED make great pictures, but MicroLED is like the newer, brighter, and longer-lasting version of OLED, even though it's harder to make right now. Both technologies are better than older TVs that use a big light behind the screen because they can turn off the lights to make the black colours deeper.
