ELI5: what is the difference between llm and ai agent

A LLM is like a parrot that can repeat and remix things it has heard, while an AI Agent is like a trained dog that can understand commands and do tasks.

Think of it this way:

• LLM (Large Language Model): Imagine a super smart parrot that has read every book and listened to every conversation ever. You can ask it a question, and it can use all that information to give you an answer that sounds really good. It’s great at writing stories, summarizing information, or even translating languages. But the parrot doesn't really understand what it's saying or why. It's just really good at putting words together based on what it has learned. For example, you ask it "What's the weather?" and it can give you a detailed weather report, but it can't actually go outside and feel the weather.

• AI Agent: Now imagine a trained dog. You can tell it to "fetch the newspaper," and it knows what "newspaper" means and how to "fetch" it. It understands the goal you're giving it. An AI agent is similar. It uses things like LLMs as part of its "brain," but it also has other tools and abilities. It can make decisions, plan steps, and interact with the real world (or a digital world). It's not just about answering questions; it's about doing things. For example, an AI agent could use an LLM to understand your request to "book a flight to Disneyland," then it could go online, search for flights, compare prices, and actually book the flight for you.
