ELI5: What is the difference between an EV and a plug-in hybrid

5 views Mar 12, 2026 2 min read

A plug-in hybrid is like a car that can run on both electricity and gas, while an EV only runs on electricity.

Imagine you have two toy cars.

  • EV (Electric Vehicle): This toy car only uses batteries. You have to plug it into the wall to charge the batteries. When the batteries run out, the car stops. It's like a phone – you only charge it with electricity.
  • Plug-in Hybrid: This toy car is special. It has batteries and a small gas tank.
First, you can plug it in to charge the batteries, just like the EV. If the batteries run out, it can switch to using gas, just like a normal car. It's like having a toy car that can run on both batteries and* gas.

So, in real life:

  • An EV needs to be plugged in to charge its big battery. You drive until the battery is empty, then you plug it in again. You never need to put gas in it.
  • A plug-in hybrid can also be plugged in to charge a smaller battery. You can drive on battery power for a shorter distance (maybe to school and back). If you need to go on a long trip, the car can switch to using gasoline, just like a regular car. You need to fill it with gas sometimes.
Basically, a plug-in hybrid gives you a little bit of both worlds – the option to drive electric for short trips and the safety net of gasoline for longer trips. An EV is purely electric and relies entirely on being charged.
