ELI5: what is the difference between ai and machine learning

AI is the big idea of making machines smart, while machine learning is one way to teach them.

Imagine you want to teach your dog, Sparky, to fetch. AI is like the grand goal: you want Sparky to be a super-smart dog that understands lots of things and can do cool tricks.

Machine Learning (ML) is one method you can use to train Sparky. Instead of just yelling "Fetch!" over and over, you use a method that helps him learn from his mistakes. Here's how it works:

• You throw the ball.
• If Sparky brings it back, you give him a treat! Good boy, Sparky!
• If Sparky runs off with the ball, you gently guide him back and show him what you wanted.

Think about everyday things:

• AI: A self-driving car. The AI is the whole system that lets the car drive itself, including understanding traffic, following road rules, and avoiding obstacles.
• Machine Learning: The part of the self-driving car that learns to recognize stop signs. It sees thousands of pictures of stop signs, and each time it correctly identifies one, it gets a "reward" (the system reinforces that it did the right thing). If it makes a mistake, it gets corrected. This learning from data is machine learning.
