ELI5: What is the difference between a heat pump and an air conditioner

7 views Mar 12, 2026 2 min read

A heat pump is like a two-way door for heat, while an air conditioner is only a one-way door.

Imagine your house is like a room, and heat is like little bouncy balls.

  • An air conditioner is like a machine that only throws the bouncy balls (heat) out of the room to make it cooler. It can only cool. Think of it like a one-way bouncy ball launcher aimed outside. In summer, it throws the hot bouncy balls out to keep you cool.
  • A heat pump is like a special machine that can either throw the bouncy balls (heat) out of the room OR bring bouncy balls into the room. It can both heat and cool! It has a switch to change direction.
In the summer, it works like the air conditioner, throwing the hot bouncy balls out to cool the room. But in the winter, it reverses! It finds bouncy balls (heat) even outside in the cold air (there are always some, even if it feels freezing!), and brings them inside to warm up the room. It's like magically finding warmth and bringing it in.

So, an air conditioner only cools, while a heat pump can both cool and heat. That's why a heat pump can replace both your air conditioner and your furnace in many climates, saving you money and space.
